She is proud of having as a mentor Nick Bonham of the auction family, and impressed by her belief in herself and her originality, he has encouraged her to pursue her style, which is informed by her graphic design background. In her latest show, four little money boxes are painted as an installation: she bought them from a secondhand shop because of their iconic British shapes as phone boxes and a pillar box. This had struck her as an ideal Olympics UK follow up to her participation in the Gibson Guitar Town project. In that, she exhibited , along with Sir Peter Blake and others, on the windswept Thames South Bank site More London creatively painted 10ft high fibreglass guitars, which kept the cameras of awestruck tourists popping, and which were eventually auctioned for charity. Her musical hero, Mike Rutherford, lead guitarist and co-founder of the band Genesis, signed her guitar sculpture, entitled The Tree of Knowledge.
Her work has also been on display at British Airways Heathrow Terminal 5, Heathrow, including the teasingly titled Flying without Wings, which she painted with the canvas flat on the floor. This one is certainly different: to capture the feeling of flying she includes a striking blotch of seemingly non-drying paint.
In the run-up to 2012, Nathlyn is absolutely worthy of a first gold medal!
