Originally a painter, Cher started creating assemblages in 2008, when her brother (also an artist) introduced her to assemblage. Lynn, a painter living with motor neuron disease had lost the fine motor skills making it impossible to hold a paintbrush, so he started putting assemblages together. He introduced Cher to Dale Copland a well known assemblage artist in the area and Joseph Cornell (1903 – 1972) the grandfather of assemblage art. Cher often uses boxes as her starting point like Cornell.

Cher is drawn to vintage and period pieces, which offer a nostalgic touch to an otherwise 'new' work. Inspiration can come from an autobiographical event, a song lyric or newspaper article.

Cher works with antique jewellery, cigar, cigarette and wine boxes and finds many of her materials on the street, beach, woods or in recycle bins or skips. Cher also uses items bought at car boot sales, jumble sales and objects given to her by friends and family.
