Russell Thoburn is a contemporary artist who combines his fine art practice with facilitating art workshops and supporting local communities. The majority of these involve working with recycled materials. His personal work has been exhibited throughout Europe and America and has been handled by Sotheby's and Harrods. It's featured on page 3 of the Daily Star, the New Statesman and the colour supplements of the Sunday Times. "What's fantastic about working with carrier bags is that they are familiar to us all, yet as an art medium they're new. This often encourages a sense of liberation, exploration and curiosity. The material has been stretched and pulled, literally - melted, toasted, ironed, wrapped and even platted. It has been explored in two and three dimensions, inside and outside, on a minute and massive scale and has been embraced by individuals and groups from Nurseries right through to Elders in residential centres. The medium also lends itself to exploring text/language and obviously our environment - Recycle - Reduce - Re-use!!
