Community Art is Art for the People by the People

Frederica Venn is a Poet, Sculptor and Artist who believes in combining the Arts, while encouraging others, from all backgrounds and ages, to express themselves through process, and project led Events.

Frederica Venn qualified in Community Arts at Reading College in 2003 (the only Course in England to offer this Degree, and which entailed numerous ‘live’ projects, over the three years). She attended Heatherley College after leaving school and then worked for many years as an Assistant Stage Designer in Edinburgh, Liverpool and Colchester, before leaving this to travel, write a novel, and most of all to write and perform her own poetry. She became well known as a poet in Amsterdam and London and still occasionally performs in both cities. Her skills are in Public Art, Fine Art, Sculpture, Installation, Murals, Mosaics, Land Art, Screen Printing, Felt Making, Silk Painting, Events, Exhibitions, Presentations, and Poetry, Theatre and Art Workshops.

In 2005, supported by the CMS (Church Mission Society) she traveled to Sri Lanka to help the Bishop of Colombo in the aftermath of the Tsunami. Traveling around the affected areas, she helped children express themselves through art, drama, poetry and painting. Given special protection by the Church she was able to travel and later live in the Tamil Tiger (the LTTE) heartlands in the North and North East, and commute to the Sri Lankan Army occupied, Jaffna region in the North. These are areas that have been devastated by a 30 year Civil War. And the Tsunami. Many art projects were done with the orphans that she worked with, including gardens and water features, and making of mosaics, large public sculptures, murals and drama, art productions and workshops. She finally worked at a Deaf and Blind School until the resuming of hostilities after a 4 year Cease Fire, closed the School, as the families fled the area. She is now actively seeking work here in the UK. But would be willing to travel overseas, especially to trauma affected places.
