Kate Pelling - Equivocate

Pelling, Kate
Kate Pelling decided to look for a personification of ‘performance’ in order to investigate constructions of identity and this decision manifested itself in the shape of Elvis Impersonation. 'In Pursuit of Elvis' has now become focused on the performance of gender and drag; including psychoanalytical notions of becoming, the relationship between drag and grief and exploring theory around the power of the performative within society. ‘In Pursuit of Elvis’, consists of a multidisciplinary sketchbook using Fine Art, Queer theory, Performance theory and Psychology, all of which form a body of work due to be completed in 2008. Kate Pelling's primary tool is herself; she also uses language, costume, video, drawing and theoretical research. The video works are achieved entirely through improvisation. Processes serve the purpose of making further comment on the current culture of fame in relation to identity, by questioning the way we look at and what we expect from performed representation.
