Poulton, Larry
To be all that a man can be" Abraham Maslow.
Influences and Direction
Patience is the key. Patience and an eye for a picture, even if the scene is transitory. You have to wait and you have to be quick. I view life frame by frame and savour every moment. A photo is a frozen slice of time. Well done it can embody and reveal the moment gone by, forever.
I have long enjoyed Fantasy and Sci-Fi and the likes of Jim Burns, Chris Foss and Tim White are great inspirations. I also admire the Pre-Raphaelites. Alma Tadema and John Waterhouse are amazing. I suppose what all these have in common is evoking a mood in their work. I find them all full of emotion. It's as if you have walked in, in the midst of some happening and are privileged to have partaken. I try to make my paintings and photography just like that and I do feel privileged to be able to communicate this.
The process is sometimes frustrating but often fantastically rewarding. When it is, there is no feeling like it. It's like giving birth to a completely new idea.
Biography
I was born in 1962 in London in the midst of a cold, cold winter. An only child, I painted from as early as I can remember. In later years I came to take up the brushes again (another story there).
In my teens I started making music and that again is a part of my life.
My working life started in 1984 as a labourer in the MOD. After a while I transferred to a technical grade , thence to an administrative position. it was here that I was introduced to computers for the first time. I became the office "expert" and eventually left the MOD to take up a IT position within a London law firm. I gained a lot of experience there and, perhaps naturally, got interested in photo editing software, 3D rendering software and music production software. in 2006 I was made redundant from my job. This was perhaps a blessing in disguise as I then decided after many years of denial that I was, in fact, an Artist.
I started painting again, developed my music and generally enjoyed all things creative.
In 2006 I took up photography. I like the immediacy of photography compared to the sometimes lengthy process of painting. I don't think I favour any one style of photography. To me, if it looks good - or could look good, I photograph it. I do spend some time in Photoshop tweaking, sometimes subtly, sometimes radically.
So as not to let it feel left out I also stated to write my first book. It is nearing completion and I already have an idea for a second outing.
I have three children from my first marriage - all great and I am very proud to be their father. I am now living with a wonderful creative and supportive woman in SE London. I try to be creative every day and intend to earn a living by it.
I gain a great deal of satisfaction from my photographs and nothing would please me more than for others to appreciate them and perhaps be tempted to want to own a copy of one.
