Dixon,
Sarah
I work at Kew Studios in West London.
Originally a biologist and conservationist, in my work I seek to explore the representation of humans and animals, blending traditional and contemporary techniques. Photography, film and animation are also used to explore similar themes regarding the place of humanity in nature, and how we discover our true nature.
Other interests include wild food, using plant dyes and sheep's fleece. I have lived in the Amazon region and am much inspired by myths and fairytales that connect us with nature.
My paintings usually start with a loose idea or an inspiration from another work or from people around me, often close friends and family, then evolve into compositions in which colour, form and material become primary subjects. Often, nature will become involved, particularly plants which fascinate me.
Icons encapsulate many childhood memories and experiences growing up in Cyprus. They also represent a window onto the soul and give believers access to their gods. And they are simply, attractive images. Their symbolic power fascinates me and I seek to explore a different but related symbolic language, rooted in nature and the non-human but living world.
A connection with earth is very important in giving a sense of reality, of grounding. Thus, materials come from the earth, mars red, yellow ochre, linseed oil, gold. I use found wooden boards and make my own tools sometimes, seeking connection with the physical and material world. Traditional techniques also are used to give a similar grounding sense of connection with the past.
