Hornby, Nick
Interrogating the audiovisual conventions of film, I create a performance that individuates sound and image. Throughout, they contest one another a-harmoniously, contradict one another a-tonally, and merge polyphonically or rhythmically. Varied and dynamic relationships emerge as sound mirrors image, images follow sounds or the two diverge independently and merge ambiguously. Images rattle and pulse, sounds glow. I am exploring the acoustic cello as a performing instrument to control video. Where the guts of the instrument are laid bare, suspended across a bridge, and the physicality of the sound is so visible, from the moving arm and fingers, to the contract of the bow and vibrating string.'dot2dot:' a program I wrote that generated 500 random join-the-dots. Perforated, and mounted in a semi-domestic aluminium holder and placed by the phone. I play with the audiences expectations: I present a logical structure which ultimately amounts to no nonsense or perhaps a do-it-yourself Pollock or Kaminski. Logic thrown on top of chaos; upon first encounter, you'd imagine the dots form some sort of image, but then working it out with a pencil would reveal the fakery.
