African Peoples Link
African People's Link developed out of a self-help group in 1998 by group of 12 dedicated refugee women volunteers in response to what they viewed as their unmet needs. The women felt that they could use their extensive skills and expertise acquired both in the UK and abroad to help their families and to give back to the wider community. Since then APL have grown into a larger organisation and became a registered charity in July 2000. Aims: to relieve poverty/ advance education/ promote good health/ provide recreational and cultural activities. Many of the founding members are on the board of the organisation and have formed a cultural dance group which they perform at various community events. APL currently run the following projects: Supporting young refugee people who are dyslexic through mentoring and skills training Parenting skills training and intergenerational work Accelerate to work - encouraging unemployed women back into work; Managing diversity through community and family involvement; Supporting single fathers with their children project; Being cultural and living healthy Craft classes - sewing, bead making etc, for women from ethnic minority groups to practice their spoken English as well as learning a new craft
