Watson, Deborah
I attended Central St Martins, and am always working with the human form either as a make up artiste who styles hair or beautifies the body with henna. I paint the human form in narrative urban Coptic style. I also work with photographers to address prejudices towards certain forms. I have made costumes and have designed for dance pieces at Saddlers Wells. I style hair, work on photo shoots, paint henna and other free flow mediums onto fabric. I have worked with both Gucci and a catalogue for hair and make up. I facilitate workshops on henna and Islamic art, teach children, drug rehabilitation, over 55,s and Saturday schools, as well as manage projects. I taught myself henna which is my passion. Currently I am working on a series of pieces with Faisal Abdul Allah, reference to the ongoing hijaab (veil) vibe and the ongoing discourse of decoration and veiling of the female form. I am doing a henna and Islamic art workshop at Leighton house and possibly, InshaALLAH, I am going to get funded to travel to Morocco and research the feminine symbolism coded in henna patterns, that are also found on ceramics and textiles.
