Robinson, Alex
I primarily work in glass, a medium which I find endlessly captivating. I create panels of fused or leaded glass which come alive with daylight, throwing intense pools of coloured light into the room. These panels can be permanently installed in the fabric of a building or suspended in front of an existing window. I also make wall-hung lightboxes with intricate surfaces, glittering with mosaics of translucent, opaque and iridescent glass. When switched on, these lightboxes emit a warm glow of colour and are ideal for dark corners or used as ambient evening lighting. However even switched off, light sparkles from the tiny fragments of mirror, glass nuggets, beads and glitter in the surface which means they also function as decorative wall hangings during the day.
I often work with colour themes, limiting my palette to one or two hues, to revel in the contrasts of tone and texture. Glass commissions undertaken have varied in scale and technique: recent work has ranged from creating delicate bridal jewellery through to large scale architectural panels, via interior objects such as bowls, lights and furniture.
