Joseph, Jean

I record to conserve on site and in memory; as natural history is conserved, to protect from extinction. I explore and shadow the application and weathering of materials, which are used in constructing these structures, by a process of combining photography and mixed-media, e.g., pencil, gouache - creating photo-collage relief effects. Working three-dimensionally is a natural process as my training is in Interior Architecture, hence each piece is in itself, a built representational project. I am in the process of developing a personal interpretation of contemporary African arts, based on traditional artifacts and work of artisans such as the Chapaungu stone sculptors of Zimbabwe. The aim is to compliment my relief work with sculptures and motifs on board of various textures, employing new media. I also intend to focus on other environments and work collaboratively with artist-partners.
