Carter, Stephen

The 'Westway' paintings and drawings, started in early 2002, focused on contemporary urban and public spaces. They aim to identify familiar, but overlooked urban spaces and phenomena in London, and are based on orientational views under the Westway A40 between my living and studio spaces. The subjects under investigation share some common characteristics; - they are urban spaces which are neither exactly interior nor exterior spaces. They offer shelter but are not dwellings. They are frequently avoided because they are often considered to be ugly or alienating. At the same time they are particular and local but also belong to a type that can be found in most modern cities. I wish to convey something of the strange subterranean feeling for the pedestrian in these spaces.
