Medlicott, Mary

I am a professional storyteller working with adults and children in performance and workshop situations. I have been developing my work since the early 1980's and have worked throughout Britain and abroad. I have worked closely with many teachers and literacy co-ordinators and other storytellers and arts professionals including musician Kathie Prince, painter Catrin Webster and storytellers Karen Tovell, Mike Dunstan and Sally Tonge. I strongly believe that storytelling is a basic human capacity which we can all develop and enjoy. Storytelling is relaxing, imaginative and vital to our understanding of the world. Many of my projects have been with people of varied cultures and language backgrounds and this has resulted in my 'story-sharing' approach. My performance work owes much to my Welsh background (I am a Welsh speaker) and to the mixture of stories I experienced growing up in South West Wales. I tell stories and anecdotes of real experience as well as folktales and myths, often interweaving these with poems and songs. As a partner in the storytelling consultancy, The Whole Story, I undertake consultancies in storytelling development and training for arts venues, library and museum authorities.
