Originally from Australia, choreographer Frances Barbe trained first in ballet and modern dance for fifteen years, before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Drama at University of Queensland. Since 1992 she has specialised in exploring cross-cultural performance, including contemporary Japanese methods, especially the provocative and inspiring Butoh dance. She has choreographed numerous ensemble and solo dance works, including Palpitation, Fine Bone China, and Chimaera. In 2006, Fine Bone China wa shown at the clore studio, Royal Opera House, London and invited to Singapore. Chimaera premiered at Hoxton Hall and will be staged in Brisbane Australia on Frank Theatre company.

She performs for an international Butoh company, Mamu Dance Theatre, touring Europe and the UK. She was awarded a Creative Fellowship in Performing Arts, from AHRB and Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in 2001 and was artistic director of the Daiwa International Butoh Festival in London in 2005. She teaches regularly in a number of universities and drama schools throughout England.
