Fields, Lis
Lis Fields makes paintings and computer-generated digital prints using geometric forms derived from nature and science.
She creates abstracted geometric images with intense, saturated colours. The contrasts and diffusions of colour create dazzling optical effects. The images oscillate between seeming two-dimensional, creating a shallow space and creating an infinite space. The 'Source' pictures are derived from a simple geometric ovaloid, reminiscent of an egg or a drop of liquid. The 'Poppy' and 'Tulip' pictures derive from the geometric structures of the centres of flowers. The interplay of colour, tone and shape, make these images hover between figuration and abstraction. The 'Poppy', 'Tulip' and 'Source' series each exist as paintings and as digital prints. There is a tension between the different media. The paintings appear to be mechanically made but are hand painted with a brush; the digital prints have the vivacity of paint and the smooth surface of photographs. The surfaces of these images are physically as well as optically complex. Lis has worked to commission for numerous companies and private clients. With her background in both art and science she is able to devise unique images for scientific and technical companies which the scientists as well as the layman can appreciate.
