Hope, Kevin
I graduated from the University of the West of England in Bristol in 1996, since then I have lived and worked in London. Drawing and making sculpture is what I live for. I have always drawn to understand the world around me. And the more I draw the less I seem to know, so I come right back to drawing again. When I make sculpture I'm just drawing in space, really - they seem like the same process anyway. When I get the chance I work in pure abstraction. I let myself drift into a world of pure form, and here I feel most at home. That happens rarely, though, and most of the work I have exhibited has been figurative: portraits or animals being popular choices. My work is heavily informed by the nature of the materials I use, and I enjoy the process of discovering each new media's qualities (in the past I have used cardboard, steel, wood, plastic, foam, chipboard, welding curtain, fabric and plaster to name a few) I am keen to work on large or small public sculpture projects and private commissions. I considerable experience working in education, and would like to keep using my skills as a communicator and teacher. I have always seen art as something supremely accessible, not elitist, and I am keen to help others see it as such.
