Abdu'Allah, Faisal

Faisal Abdu'Allah presents a complex and challenging set of reference points for his work. He has shown widely internationally and particularly participated in a large number of significant museum exhibitions, alongside significant contemporaries. Abdu'Allah has completed a number of public commissions and has been featured extensively on TV, allowing the complexities of his life to be documented for numerous BBC films. His most significant turning point and foundation for the interpretation of his work was his adult choice to convert to Islam. The religion is specific to the urban the Black communities in the western world and is inextricably linked to the teachings of Malcolm X. Abdu'Allah's work addresses universal issues, such as self- definition and social reality in his work rather than promoting a particular point of view. Origin and contemporary reality are at all times ajar in Abdu'Allah's art. Educated in printmaking at the Royal College, the artist possesses very refined screen-printing techniques. He has developed methods of printing on materials such as stone, glass, copper and steel. Considering the historically indebted way of producing Faisal Abdu'Allah makes little concession to history in the content of his work.
