Izadi, Nilu
I am a freelance artist photographer specialising in pinhole photography. My aim is to teach the principles of photography to students through the camera obscura and through pinhole photography workshops. A camera obscura, by means of simple open holes in the walls, serves as a giant camera displaying all around the interior of the walls, bright colourful upside down and inverted images of the scenes outside the holes. If someone walks past the building they will be projected inside the building walking upside down. It is both captivating and enthralling to see how science works in such a direct and immediate way. I have taught pinhole photography workshops privately in India and New Mexico and as a part of gallery education programmes. The Serpentine Gallery invited me to teach pinhole photography for its Summer School 2003 to 16 year olds based in the Westminster area. They learnt how to print their photographs in the darkroom we set up and produced wonderfully interesting images using colour and black and white papers. I am currently working on camera obscura projects in Wales and with The Salt Water Gallery, Norfolk and am teaching workshops through the Photographer's Gallery for the Lister School.
