Siemaszko, Anna

I come from Poland where I graduated from the Painting Department at the Academy of Fine Art, Krakow (MA, honours, 2001). Recently I started working in a small studio in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea where I experiment with my painting technique, which generally is very traditional (oil on canvas). I am particularly interested in portraying people; sometimes directly, but more often I attempt to present the situations in which they find themselves. 'Being closely surrounded by people' is a fact of our lives, a fact from which we can often try to escape. In painting we can escape through the landscape, still life or by treading purely formal qualities as totally determining the value of the paintings. Painting is often considered to be a language, but language has to communicate and Anna Siemaszko really does: She tries to communicate with us in arguably the most important matter, in the matter of our mutual understanding.
