Pickering, David

David Pickering is a writer and performer who is highly interested in collaborative work. He has worked in most mediums, writing novels, plays, short films, spoken word for radio and internet, website, magazine articles and songs.

He wants to make accessible yet artistic work that makes people think and re-evaluate the world around them. There is often a political dimension to his work but he is equally interested in aesthetics and emotion. All genres, media, audience ages and performance styles interest him.

He is interested in any proposals for new projects that are presented to him and also has a number of projects awaiting collaborators.

He founded a production company called The Strangely Compelling, which produced successful new writing material for local theatre and radio in the Lancaster area from 2000-2004. They also took a show down to the Edinburgh festival that got favourable reviews and broke even (hard to do for a first show at the fringe.) David wrote, directed, arranged publicity campaigns and copy and performed in shows created by the Strangely Compelling. He also compared and organised regular performance poetry and acoustic music nights for them.

He is a member of The Trailing Edge, a satirical comedy show that will “make you cry until you laugh. This show was nominated for the National Student Radio Awards in 2003 and 2004. It was also offered a regular slot on SBN (the student broadcast network) but this fell through due to cuts in SBN’s funding and changes in their management structure. The Trailing Edge is currently available online and is in the process of recording a new series for an up and coming podcast station called RE:Think:Daily.

David is currently writing and assisting the direction of a drama series for RE:Think:Daily called Numbers.

His poetry and articles have been published in a number of websites and magazines.

He has always been active as a singer-songwriter/member of bands. Currently he is making solo work under the name The Dave and as part of a theatrical art concept musical duo called The Middle Class Bastards.

He has performed music as both The Dave and The Middle Class Bastards as part of The Fresh Festival, an arts festival for emergent artists that tours the South East. He will be performing in a theatre show by a new collaborative project involving song, performance poetry, theatre and film called Window in The Fresh Festival: Hastings on the 23rd of September.
