Wood, Rebecca
Her artistic practice has been hugely influenced by her upbringing in West Yorkshire. Rebecca responds to vast and desolate rural landscapes as well as the derelict structures of once thriving industrial communities. Rebecca has also travelled and worked in various locations worldwide, discovering new found places that inspire her need to highlight the unseen beauty of what we choose or choose not to see.
Painting work
Often using linear lines she reduces an image to its simplest form to make visible the seemingly un-noticed derelict structures and solitary beings.
Predominantly working in acrylics Rebecca uses a palette of contrasting muted and colourful hues that bring to life a new reality that engages the viewer in to a scene often overlooked. For example ‘Lego Girl’, where a young girl is centered amongst a busy crowd yet looks so serene and deserted.
In Rebecca’s paintings the viewer is therefore deliberately left to create their own narrative around the final painted image.
Rebecca is always fascinated by the environment around us; taking a snapshot of a moment in time. Freezing a memory and transforming the image.
Installation Work
Rebecca’s installation work is based around early animation and an audience’s participation in a set of images.
Using herself as the main focus in each work Rebecca places herself as female characters throughout the 20th century, from 1950’s actresses to 1920’s flapper girls.
She then layers transparent photographs upon each other create an illusion of movement. Rebecca then puts music to the final installed piece to create a certain feeling of nostalgia, as if entering a forgotten time or memory.
Commissions
Rebecca has worked on various private commissions over the past 2 years; commissions have been based on previous work or have been set by a loose brief or theme.
For example ‘French Wedding’, a private Commission for a 1 year wedding anniversary encapsulated elements of Wedding tradition, the couples history and emotions felt throughout.
Film
Rebecca has always been interested in film and most of the imagery used in her Installation works stem from iconic film, imagery and culture.
Rebecca has now begun to work on her 1st film collaboration with film maker, composer and mixed media artist Donald Bousted.
Focusing on London’s urban landscape, Rebecca is working on a film called ‘A Crane ballet’ where building cranes in and around the city will dance to music.
Rebecca will create personalities between the cranes similar to that of a ballet narrative, opening up a beauty in objects and forms that people will not necessary appreciate or see.
The piece will take themes and choreography from traditional ballet creating an ironic love story between mechanical objects set against the London skyline.
