Sapone, Maya

Sapone, Maya
Maya Sapone is an opera singer and vocal improviser with a thrilling international background which embraces the culture of three continents: Africa, Europe and Asia. Born in Gabon to an Italian father and Thai mother Maya furthered her singing studies in England, Spain and Italy.
A specialist in the art of improvisation Maya is known for her unique versatility as a singer and the remarkable flexibility of her vocal technique.
She is an active performer in the contemporary and avant-garde music scene and sings as a soloist across the UK and worldwide. Her musical intelligence together with her sparkling personality, and endless thirst for new musical adventures, have made her an interpreter of a wide and unusual repertoire, featuring music from the baroque era to present day.
A number of composers from the new generation have been inspired to write for her vibrant voice.

Winner of the ‘2005 Gladys Puttick Memorial Prize for Extemporisation’ first prize and the Most Distinguished Musician Prize at the ‘Ibla Grand Prize’ in Italy, Maya has performed with Japanese vocal improviser Damo Suzuki; recorded with experimental cyber group Virtual Strangers for their new album ”Inquiring minds” and sung for film music composer Sergio Lopez Figueroa at the ‘Dalì & Film Exhibition Concert’, Tate Modern London (reviewed on The Guardian, July 2007). Recent engagements include the roles of Annina and Flora Bervoix in La Traviata with the European Chamber Opera (Asia Tour 2007).

Future performances comprise: a premiere of “In The Dark”, cantata for soprano and clarinet ensemble written by Iranian composer Amir Mahyar Tafreshipour; performances of “The Magdalene Mysteries” production by Elastic Theatre (Enterprise Festival 2008, London, and Roma Teatro Festival, Italy); solo recitals and concerts in England and Italy; collaborations with film composers Leonardo Di Lorenzo and Dimitri Scarlato; “The Voice & Cello Duo Project”, compositions by Claudio Vaira and Vanessa Lann.

Maya is an artist of “Concordia Foundation London”, “Music In Offices” and is associated with “European Chamber Opera” and “Vocal Motions Elastic Theatre”.
