NEXT SHOW – London Arts Café Members Exhibition – “City People” – at The Juggler, 5, Hoxton Market, London N 1, from Thursday 4th October

No one gay ever flourished in rural isolation – it takes a city environment to promote our full potential. These icons form part of an extensive, on-going series of gay icons past and present. All have bucked the system at various times and with varying degrees of courage.

Oscar Wilde, who stayed to face the music when he could so easily have fled, as did so many of his fellow “criminals”’; John Waters, whose deliberately outrageous films have since been subsumed into our cultural mainstream; Bishop Gene Robinson who still brought with him his faithful parishioners in the face of a worldwide church, hostile to his choice of lover and Sir Elton John, who finally won his biggest battle – with himself and society’s expectations of him.
